Following the success of the first annual Kennel Club Herding Test in October 2008, the second year's event took place on Saturday 31st October 2009 at The Field, Bredhurst, near Maidstone in Kent, hosted this time by the Southern Border Collie Club. The dogs once again showed off their natural herding abilities and instincts in a controlled and supervised manner.
The Show Border Collie Herding Test last year replaced the traditional Working Test and enables Border Collies with Show Champion Status to become Full Champions. The test continues to require dogs to show the principle skills of outrunning, lifting, fetching, inspecting and driving but focuses more on the core aspects of a dog’s herding ability and rewards more of its instinctive talents.
Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club spokesperson said "The Show Border Collie Herding Test aims to ensure that Border Collies are bred for their original function, and enjoy a happy, healthy life to the full, which is what our Fit for Function campaign is all about."
