BITCHES ~ Judge DITA KILSBY (TAMARSH)

Many thanks to the committee for asking me to judge this show and also to my stewards Jan and Ken Starkey for an excellent job.

Many of today’s show Border Collies are sadly a far cry from the graceful, balanced athletic sheepdog I fell in love with as a child. Gone in many cases is the lovely long effortless ground covering side gait, taken over by short stepping chopping front action caused by poor front assembly, with little or no drive from behind mostly as a result of straight stifles. There were many short tails and also huge round eyes. Over heavy bodies do not give the impression of athleticism and heads with huge deep skulls and rounded cheeks would look better placed on a Rottie. Presentation was another failing, many having knots and matts in their knickers and one bitch smelt so bad I felt physically sick. There really is no excuse. Some otherwise really nice bitches had left their clothes at home and some just didn’t like the small ring.

On the day I was looking for a Border Collie with correct upper arm and shoulder assembly, a good reach of neck, strong driving hind action with good forward reach, coupled with the quality of a show dog, which I believe it should be possible to produce.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (12,1)
1st Curtis’s MOONSPINNER DIXIE CHIC. 8½ months black and white. Promising puppy with a lovely head, nice reach of neck, correct shoulders and upper arm. Good hind angulation, moved well once settled.
2nd Jefferson and Hornsby's BEKKIS MISSISSIPPI MUD PIE. 8 months black and white. Another nice youngster, with good upper arm and shoulder, nice rear angulation and moved with good drive.
3rd Carley's GOYTRE TIA'S LEGACY OF DREAMS AT JUPAVIA

PUPPY BITCH (11,1)
1st Wilkinson's ALTRICIA WILLOW. 10 months black and white. Loved her from the moment she stepped into the ring. Lovely head, with neat tipped ears, good reach of neck, well laid shoulders and good upper arm. Well developed rib cage without being heavy in the body. Lovely croup, well turned stifles. She was a little unsettled in the class due to her handler feeling ill, but she moved well with good reach and drive. With a change of handler in the challenge she pulled out all the stops to take Best Puppy Bitch and Best Puppy in Show.
2nd Bridgeman's LOCHEIL SHEER DELIGHT AT TARRYNDEN. 9 months black and white. Another really nicely constructed puppy, with good shoulders and upper arm, held a nice topline and had good rear angulation. Moved well with good reach and drive, a little power pack in fact. Would have liked a shorter muzzle.
3rd Ward's CARISTAN MISS GEORGIA

JUNIOR BITCH (14,1)
1st Kinton's KINAWAY BLESSING IN DISGUISE. Nearly 18 month black and white. Quite a big girl but her excellent construction and powerful movement won her this class. Good shoulders and sufficient hind angulation created good reach and drive.
2nd Hale's LACEWAY BEE-WITCHING. 15months blue merle. Loved her, her huge coat gives the initial impression of her being heavy but on handling her this was not the case. She had a lovely head with neat ears, good reach of neck. Good shoulders and although a little short a well placed upper arm. Nice hind angulation and moved well but sadly dropped her topline on the move.
3rd Ulyatt's RESLEAP OCTOBER FESTIVAL AT CORNHAZE

YEARLING BITCH (8,0)
1st Wilkinson's ALTRICIA LOVE A LOT. 23months black and white. Lovely head with a true Border Collie expression, keen and alert with correct eye shape. Nice reach of neck, good shoulders and upper arm and well turned stifles. Moved very freely and soundly with good reach and drive. Just looked a little immature in the challenge but I’m sure her day will come.
2nd Ratcliffe's TONKORY DESTINED FOR GRANDVER. Nearly 2yrs, tri colour. Another really lovely bitch, good reach of neck good shoulders, level topline, nice hind angulation and moved well with good ground covering action. Very little between them, two excellent bitches.
3rd Kinton's KINAWAY BLESSING IN DISGUISE

MAIDEN BITCH (8,3)
1st Ward's CARISTAN MISS GEORGIA. 9 months black and white, a really pretty puppy who was 3rd in PB but was a lot more settled in this class. She has a very pretty head, nice reach of neck and good shoulders. Good turn of stifle and moves well in all directions.
2nd Thompson's ANSCOT DULCIE. 3yr old black and white. Nicely constructed all through and moved well but didn’t seem interested in showing.
3rd Oliver's JONJOSAM FELONY

GRADUATE BITCH (8,1)
1st Good & Lewis’s SHEMELLA MOONLIGHT SHADOW. Nearly 3yrs, black and white. Sadly out of coat but a really nice bitch, with superb head and tipped ears, excellent reach of neck and front assembly, good hind quarters and a long well carried tail. Excellent on the move, well balanced and very sound. Would love to see her again in coat, however please remember it’s not a race.
2nd Alexander's CARISTAN COCO CHANEL AT MALYNAR. 2½ yrs black and white. Nice head, well constructed all round and moved well.
3rd Morley & Rogerson's ORIENT CRACKER

POST GRADUATE BITCH (16,1) This was a gorgeous class.
1st Bridgeman's TARRYNDEN GENEVIEVE JW. 2yr old black and white. Really fell for this little girl the moment she entered the ring. Just my type, really pretty true border collie head, with correct eye shape, good stop, tipped ears. She has a good reach of neck, good shoulders and upper arm, well developed rib cage, good hind quarters and a correctly set and well carried tail. She showed to perfection and was very sound a balanced on the move. She simply never put a foot wrong. Pushed very hard in the challenge and just lost out on maturity. I’m sure she will gain her title. RCC
2nd Tasker's GOYTRE PROMISE OF FANTASY. 2yrs old black and white, another really nicely made bitch didn’t settle down to the job to well but found her very sound with good ground covering action. Perhaps she’d be better outside.
3rd Thompson's WYNMALLEN JUSTICE FOR BYTCHEK

LIMIT BITCH (19,1)
1st Harvey’s SHELTYSHAM SHAMPANE SODA. Nearly 4yrs old black and white. A real favourite of mine, shown in lovely condition. She has a nice head, good neck, shoulders and upper arm. Nice hind angulation and well carried tail (most of the time). She has excellent forward reach and good drive covering the ground well. Really felt she would go further but seemed to lose the spark in the challenge.
2nd Mann's GRANDVER MOON GODDESS AT BORDERPRIDE. 4½ years old black and white. This bitch has matured beautifully since I judged her last. Nice head, pricked ears and correct eye shape. She has a good neck and shoulders, the black leg makes it a bit difficult to assess her front movement and wouldn’t want to see her any wider, but forgave her because of her excellent powerful side gait. Strong hind quarters and correctly carried tail. A true Border collie and very well handled.
3rd Land’s CARISTAN SWEET WINE AT CASMAWLLAN

OPEN BITCH (12,1)
1st Hale's BESSAMOUR BLUE SILK. Nearly 7 yrs old Blue Merle. What a battle with my conscience I had here. She possessed everything I was looking for on the day. Every inch of her a sheep dog and every inch of her a show dog. A beautiful true Border Collie head, lovely tipped ears, her neck, shoulders, upper arm, length/height ratio, topline, rib cage, hind quarters, croup, tail, feet, everything text book in my eyes. She moved with purpose, drive and balance, and when asked to stop she stood correctly and showed her head off. She was beautifully presented, all credit to her owner and handler. I simply couldn’t take my eyes off her. Yes I was aware of the one fault she does have (thank you to those who have reminded me constantly since) however the perfect dog is yet to be born and with so many other virtues in her favour against 1 negative I felt she could not be denied the CC and later she went Reserve Best In Show
2nd Tasker's GOYTRE NEVER ENDING STORY. 6 yrs old and another of my favourites, nicely balanced head, good eye shape, Good neck, shoulders and upper arm, and strong well angled hind quarters. She moved very well in all directions but felt she looked a little matronly on the day. Pity, she is lovely.
3rd Green's SANKENALI CAROLINA AT FAYKEN (imp)

VETERAN BITCH (8,1)
1st Avory’s SHELTYSHAM HAPPY HOOKER AT TERRICA. 10 years old and another real favourite of mine. I awarded her the RCC last time I judged and sadly her age has caught up with her and she just didn’t push hard enough in the challenge. She is still a beautifully made bitch who moves extremely well with good ground covering action, and so very sound. If only I’d been able to judge her in her younger days.
2nd Forster-Cooper's SH CH SHELTYSHAM SUCH A DREAMER. 9 years old and another favourite of mine. Beautifully put together and so very sound on the move. Had a bit of a lump in my throat while watching both these girls move as they will probably be the last Travelling Matt and Blue Aberdoone daughters I’ll ever get to judge.
3rd Ward's SH CH CARISTAN COINTREAU. 12 years old, another really well known girl, who really powered round the ring.
I really loved all the oldies, thank you so much for bringing them. They all moved brilliantly, a real credit to you.
